SCA: About Hrefna

I'm in the process of creating an SCA resume with the guidance of a Laurel friend of mine, and it occurred to me that I haven't done any sort of introductory thing on this blog in a pretty long time.  So here goes: 

ME

I am Honorable Lady Hrefna Hroksdottir, and I play a 9th-century Norsewoman in the SCA, in the barony of Bryn Gwlad in the kingdom of Ansteorra. I currently hold an Award of Arms (2011) Sable Thistle (an armigerous award for arts & sciences in Ansteorra, 2015) in costuming, as well as an Iris of Merit (grant level A&S award, 2025).    

BACKGROUND AND INTERESTS

I've been sewing since I was 9 years old when my mother first taught me, and I've been costuming since I was 18 when I was in Amtgard (Barony of Tori-Mar, Celestial Kingdom).  I very much enjoy all things sewing, especially hand sewing. I'm also an avid tablet weaver, and I do a bit of woodworking, jewelry making, and making glass beads.  

I dance when I can, and I try not to let people hear me sing although I love doing it and really enjoy the bardic circle when I can make it to one.  I also cook quite a bit, although that was sort of an unintentional side-hobby - I help out the Ansteorran Longship Association with their omelet breakfast fundraisers when I can, and I've helped my friend Cristiane make feasts for events on a few occasions, too.  

I don't teach formal classes at all, although I wish I could.  I actually love teaching, but I have some pretty serious anxiety issues which make the act of standing in front of a group of people and speaking to them impossible for me.  I do, however, really enjoy teaching one-on-one, and I've done that pretty frequently.  I'd much rather come to your house to teach you tablet weaving than stand up in front of a class full of people all staring at me.  

NAME AND HERALDRY

My name, Hrefna, means "raven" in Old Norse; my last name comes from the name Hrokr, meaning crow or rook - hence, I am Raven the Crow's Daughter.  That might sound a bit silly, but it spoke to me.  (I sort of have a thing for ravens - I have a pretty large raven tattoo, and I wear raven jewelry pretty much all the time).

My device, which was just approved earlier this year, is the second one I've held.  It looks like this:

The pomegranate was a major feature on my old arms, which I had registered in 2011 when I joined the SCA.  Since I've shed my original (14th century English) persona, I decided this time around to keep the pomegranate as well as adding the raven for my new persona, as a way of honoring the "old me" and the new at the same time.  I chose the colors simply because I love blue and gold (my old device was black and white and red).  

HISTORY 

My history in the SCA is divided almost neatly in half.  I joined the SCA in 2011.  From 2011 - 2016 I focused mainly on 14th century clothing, and I enjoyed making new outfits to fit the theme of whichever event I was attending.  I did a lot of work on commission for friends, much of which is in this blog if you look back far enough. From 2016 - 2019 I took a long hiatus from the SCA in order to focus on my "real" life, which was kind of blowing up in my face at the time.  I returned in 2019 - right in time for the pandemic - and I've been focused on Viking/Norse ever since, and my sub-focus, I guess, is learning to make my clothing as historically accurate as possible (I shudder to look at some of my Viking attempts pre-2016, some of that stuff was so awful! Don't scroll back that far).  

WHAT'S NEXT? 

So where do I go from here?  I honestly don't know.  I spent many years keeping myself hidden as much as I could, and now I feel a bit invisible, although I know I'm not.  I love that I've been stepping out of my comfort zone a lot with A&S the last couple of years and I'd really like to keep building on that. Yes, I would like to be a Laurel one day, but that's going to be a long way off, I think.  I'm proud of my work, but I know I have a lot more work to do.    

I'm working on getting an Ansteorra Wiki page set up for myself - waiting to hear back from the people who do that, actually.  When it's published I'll add a link to the sidebar on this blog.

Stuff and Things

 I'm still alive, just haven't posted in a couple of weeks.  I'm in the middle of several projects right now that I'll be posting about very soon;  for right now, though, I may be off and on with posting for the next little while, because I'm dealing with a family medical situation that's taking up a lot of my time and mental energy.  

Coming soon, though: 

1.   More tablet weaving, including a new way of warping up the Oseberg loom, new wool thread to weave with, and the next A&S competition

2.  A new Roman outfit for the upcoming hot weather

3.  A new Viking outfit, which I'm sewing completely by hand for the first time

4. Maaaybe a new Regency dress.  I have a set of sheets that I don't need anymore that may become a blue-and-white dress; I also have my eye on some black cotton voile which really wants to be a mourning dress.  Not sure yet where I'll go with that (and I have to get through Hellsgate at the end of March and Warlord at the end of April first, before I start new Regency stuff!) 

Summer Lull and Plans of New Things

I haven't posted in several weeks, but believe me, I'm hard at work...doing...pretty much nothing, for the time being.  I've been hitting the yardwork and the housework pretty hard, but project-wise, I haven't been all that active. 

July is always just kind of a lull. It's too hot to play outside, so there are no SCA events going on, - that won't start happening around here until the end of August, so things are kind of at a standstill right now. 

However, I do have plans that I'd like to get into as soon as energy and finances will allow: 

• There are materials for a Regency ballgown that I've had sitting on my work table ready to cut out for weeks now that I'd like to get started on soon 
• I have [another] Big Viking Project I'd like to get into as soon as I can get the wool for it
• I have several plans for small improvements around camp - like a cooler refit and a change to my bedding situation
• I really want to get back to making glass beads, but it's 105º right now, and nearly that hot inside the garage - too hot to sit over a flame to make glass!  (Although, part of me says, if I can mow the grass when it's 90º at 9:00 in the morning, I can probably sit in the garage and make beads? I dunno, I may try it soon)

No BAM for Hrefna - What's Next?

 So it turns out that I can't make it to BAM this weekend after all.  My ride got very sick at the last minute, and I can't make the trip on my own or find another ride.  So I'll have a nice, long weekend off work to myself, to rest and work on various projects around the house.  Here's what I've got going on right now, which I'll be posting about in the coming weeks: 

• SCA:  I'm crocheting a new Hedeby bag (yes, crochet, I'll tell you all about it soon) - I need to finish it and then dye the finished product
• SCA:  I've decided to update the male Viking tunic I made for myself over a year ago, which will involve changing the neckline and sleeve cuffs
• Regency:  I'm in the middle of working on a new hat for myself, which I need to finish and then trim up with ribbon and floral elements
• Regency:  I have a new outfit planned, and some accessories to go with it.  That'll be a lot of pattern drafting and engineering patterns from pictures I've seen online

Plus I have about a million other little projects around the house to get done, some of which I'll post here and some I won't (you don't care about the doorknob on my pantry, right?)  I have plenty of things to keep me busy over the long weekend, as well as a birthday dinner for my best friend and roommate; and lots of projects to plan and work on over the coming winter.

It Goes "Ding" When There's Stuff!

 MAN I have been busy the last few weeks.  I haven't been blogging much, because I've been too caught up in my work.  I went to two SCA events in a row, and then threw a big Halloween/birthday party at my house.  So the past three weeks or so have been spent spiffing up garb and costumes, cleaning the house and getting ready for the party like a crazy person, and decorating for our local Baronial event, which was last weekend.  Our decorator got sick, so I took over for her, and made fences and flags and tablecloths and all sorts of neat stuff.  

Now that it's all overwith (all three events were awesome and made my heart full!), it's time to turn to the next set of Things: 

1. BAM (Bordermarch Autumn Melees, now called War of the Rams, in Gleann Abhan on the 17th) 
2. More Regency stuff
3. Prepping for next Halloween - yes, already

For BAM (War of the Rams, whatever, we all still call it BAM), I need to delve into my Viking wardrobe and see what fits and what doesn't.  During the pandemic, I made like five new apron dress outfits, but then quickly grew out of them and had to replace them with two more in a hurry before this fall.  But in the past two months, I've lost some weight, and I think my "old" new dresses might fit me again.  So I've got a lot of trying on and possibly altering to do, in order to have enough to wear for a five-day event.  I also need to repair my camp chair, as the seat blew out at baronial two weeks ago.  Whoopsie! 

For Halloween, I wore my white Regency round gown and the teal cap I made a couple of months ago.  Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get any decent pics of me in the dress for you.  A few friends have recently expressed a desire to get dressed up in Regency finery and go to tea somewhere.  The local English-style tea house is very expensive, and booked up months in advance; so I decided that next Spring I'll just host my own tea party and invite all my Regency-costume-minded friends.  I just happen to have a heap of teal cotton, so I'm planning on making this dress to wear:

And for next Halloween, I want to change up my decorating scheme, so I'm starting with my collection of (8?) brass candlesticks.  I got them at a thrift store for a couple of bucks each many years ago, and smeared them with black paint to make them look gross and tarnished.  I decided for next year (and for the tea party) I want them gold again, so I tried to take the paint off, but it's been stuck on there for so long that it wouldn't come off no matter what I tried.  Rub N Buff to the rescue!  

So far, so good.  I'm still not finished with them.
